Tell us about the origins of Hang.

Hang Massive: The Hang is a hand-made instrument from Switzerland. It is made there by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer. Previously, they had been making traditional steel pans and through much experimentation and dedication they arrived at making the Hang. They have already moved on to making a new instrument called the Gubal.

What is the instrument made of? How difficult/easy is to master playing the Hang?

Hang Massive: The Hang is made from steel that has undergone some very specific procedures. It has such a beautiful sound and it is simple to create nice sounding music very early on. The process to master any instrument is always ongoing.

What made you learn the Hang?

Danny: I met somebody with a Hang in 2006 and was immediately interested in learning more. About a year later I travelled to Switzerland to meet the makers and purchase an instrument. I saw that there was a great potential to make very unique music with this new instrument. When I met Markus the transition to playing together was very effortless and lots of fun.

How do people usually react to the Hang?

Hang Massive: People generally love it! It is not so often that people see a new instrument. Increasingly, we now meet people who have seen our videos online and they really enjoy seeing us play live.

Do you feel Hang is here to stay and will be a part of mainstream music soon?

Markus: I feel that the Hang and other instruments that have been inspired by it are here to stay and that these sounds will be heard in a variety of contexts. Already it has been heard in many documentaries, TV commercials and some main stream music. Our use of the Hang with our electronic fusion projects will bring the sound a new and wider audience.
